Market Challenges

Major roadblocks to doing business in Niger include the small size of Niger's market, an unskilled and uneducated workforce, and low per capita income. The economy mainly consists of subsistence agriculture and informal market activity.
Niger has a small and fragile economy based largely on subsistence-level agriculture and animal husbandry. Hard hit by frequent drought and increasing desertification, Niger ranks 174th out of 174 counties on the United Nations Development Fund index of human development.

Market Opportunities

Telecommunications
- There is growth potential in telecommunications. Under the terms of its privatization, SONITEL, the former state-owned phone company, was granted a monopoly on all international voice connections and Internet communications. In December 2004, this monopoly ended and all 1/30/2006 5 companies are now able to compete equally. Telecommunications and Internet service providers that get in early will be well placed to quickly gain market share. - As part of the terms of privatization, SONITEL is barred from competing in the cell phone market. The Government has issued three cell phone licenses, with two companies already operational. A third company began operations in January 2004. Additionally, one license has been granted to Wireless Fidelity Internet service.

Other Business Opportunities

Export opportunities may exist in vehicles (especially for export to Nigeria), pharmaceuticals (herbal and generic drugs), heavy construction and earth-moving equipment, food processing, and coal-fired electrical generating equipment.
Companies involved in mining equipment manufacturing, finance and investment, geophysical mapping, consulting, and wastewater treatment facility construction are best placed to benefit from the revitalization of Niger's mining industry.
With continued high levels of donor assistance, there are opportunities for providing consulting and engineering services to development projects supported by the World Bank and African Development Bank, other multilateral banks, and bilateral donors.

Political in Niger

The junta that seized power in a military coup in Niger today identified its leader as squadron chief Salou Djibo.
Junta leader Djibo is an officer trained in Ivory Coast, Morocco and China who has served in U.N. peacekeeping missions. Other leaders include Colonel Djibril Hamidou, a key player in Niger's last coup in 1999 that paved the way for the vote that brought Tandja to power. Despite the international condemnation, diplomats and analysts said the overthrow of Tandja could create an opportunity to hold the elections that were postponed by his unpopular constitutional reform.

Calling itself the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy (CSRD), the junta yesterday stormed Niger's presidential palace in broad daylight. They captured president Mamadou Tandja and his ministers in a four-hour gunbattle that left at least three people dead.

Tensions have been growing in the country since last August, when Tandja, himself a former army officer, changed the constitution to allow him to stay in power beyond his legal term limit. The move provoked a political crisis and threw Niger into isolation.
