Economy

In 2009, the economy was still feeling the effects of the cotton, energy and food crises of the preceding years, and the torrential rains of September 2009 made matters worse. The economy nonetheless recorded positive growth, although the growth rate slowed from 5.2% in 2008 to 3%. This growth was driven by services (which contributed 1.3 percentage points to real GDP growth) and, to a lesser extent, by the primary and secondary sectors (0.9 and 0.7 percentage points respectively).

The economy is dominated by the primary sector and services. The primary sector (agriculture, livestock, forestry and fisheries) accounts for no less than 34.5% of GDP. It is followed by trade, transport and communications (17.1%). Manufacturing is not highly developed (12% of GDP), while the mining sector, although it has grown very strongly in the last two years, still accounts for only a small share of GDP (2.8%).

Political in Burkina Faso

Politic in Burkina

The political situation in Burkina Faso is fairly stable. Although the political system is based on democracy and pluralism, the opposition is still weak and disorganised. A law recognising and defining the status of the opposition was adopted on 14 April 2009, and a national assembly resolution designating the opposition leader on 22 September 2009. It is still uncertain whether an open, transparent, credible and equitable presidential election will be organised in November 2010, because there is talk of revising Article 37 of the constitution, which limits the number of consecutive terms the president can serve. This plan is causing a good deal of agitation in political circles and civil society.

President Blaise Compaoré has been in power since 1987. He was first elected in 1991 and re-elected in 1998 and 2005. He plays a key role in conflict resolution in the sub-region, notably in Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea and Togo.

Internet Access

  • The arrival of a second international fibre optic submarine cable (Glo-1) in Ghana in September 2009 is expected to bring down the cost of international bandwidth dramatically by creating competition with the SAT-3/WASC cable. Several of Burkina Fasos other neighbouring countries will gain access to a second and in some cases third cable (ACE) in 2011. However, consumers and the countrys entire economy will only benefit from lower broadband prices if Onatel passes these cost savings on to them and also to other ISPs on the wholesale level
